Dynamique des matières en suspensions minérales des eaux de surface de la Manche observée par satellite et modélisée numériquement. ArchiMer
Rivier, Aurelie.
Study of mineral suspended particulate matter (SPM) is essential to understand ecosystem dynamics. SPM influences light penetration which is closely related to primary production and carries pollutants and nutrients within the water masses. This work aims to study near-surface mineral SPM dynamics in the English Channel using two complementary methods: remote-sensing by satellites and numerical modelling. Firstly, MODIS and MERIS satellite images processed by the IFREMER semi-analytical algorithm and describing non-algal SPM, are analysed to build three statistical models which are able to estimate near-surface SPM using simple variables, e.g., tidal coefficient, significant wave height and mean chlorophyll-a concentration. Secondly, the three-dimensional...

Flux sédimentaire en estuaire de Seine : quantification et variabilité multi-échelle sur la base de mesure de turbidité (réseau SYNAPSES) ArchiMer
Druine, Flavie.
The dynamics of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) in macrotidal estuaries is highly variable both spatially (from the fluvial compartment to the estuary mouth) and temporally (from the second to several years), but it is essential to understand and quantify the sedimentary dynamics of estuarine environments. With the development of high-frequency measurement networks around the world, the main objective of this study is to qualify the turbidity measurements acquired by a high-frequency measurement network (SYNAPSES network) located on the Seine estuary (i) in terms of monitoring the SPM dynamics from the fluvial compartment to the turbidity maximal zone (TMZ) and (ii) in terms of estimation of the SPM fluxes on different spatio-temporal scales of the...

Matière en suspension et sédimentation dans la lagune de Thau ArchiMer
Pichot, Paul; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Juge, Claude.
Thau is a mediterranean lagoon with a large productive stock of molluscs (oysters, mussels) cultivated on suspended tines and colonised by epibionta (ascidia and others invertebrates, algae, etc ... ). This study was developed as part of the PNOC-OXYTHAU.programme. Its aim was to analyze the effects of oyster farrning on water-mass surrounding structures loaded with suspended molluscs and proximal watermass separating these structures. This study concems particulate suspended matter and deposits of particulate organic matter on the bottom after sedimnentation. Biochemical measurements were carried out for nitrogen, carbon,  proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. ln order to estimate sedimentaton, bottom sediment traps were used

Particulate matter in Takapoto lagoon waters: potential food for cultivated pearl oysters ArchiMer
Buestel, Dominique; Pouvreau, Stephane.
Results of research concerning the food of the pearl oyster Pinctada mai margaritifera are presented, by taking Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia) as a study site. Monthly sampling of several parameters representative of bivalve environment and food (water temperature, salinity, mineral and organic matter, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, chlorophyll a and phaeopigments) confirm and increase knowledge of the Takapoto lagoon hydrobiology. The variability of these parameters was analysed. Takapoto lagoon showed a remarkable spatial stability. Temporal variations showed a low seasonal trend. Local meteorology (wind, precipitation) had an influence on short-term variability (especially for mineral matter). Night and day rhythm also...

Sources et caractéristiques des composés phénoliques dans l’estuaire de la Seine ArchiMer
Motamed, B; Texier, H.
Within the framework of the multi-disciplinary program Seine Aval, phenolic compounds obtained by CuO oxidation have been studied since 1995. Quantitative analyses have shown a terrestrial contribution in flood, characterized by compounds of the group P (polyols + phenol), S (syringic) and H (hydroxybenzoic). During the low water period, phenolic compounds allow a clear distinction between fluvial and estuarine suspended material. Fluvial run-off contained Syringic, Hydroxybenzoic and Vanillic phenols. In contrast, upstream penetrating marine and estuarine waters are characterized by cinnamic phenols originating from estuarine herbus. In the turbidity maximum zone, aerobic degradation of lignin material increases the (vanillic acid/vanillin) ratio.

Surface suspended matter off the Rhone river mouth from visible satellite imagery ArchiMer
Forget, P; Ouillon, S.
The quantification of surface Total Suspended Matter (TSM) off the Rhone river mouth is investigated using SPOT-XS and Landsat-TM images collected in November 1994. The method of satellite data calibration from in situ measurements is discussed. It is based on TSM concentration measurements through filtration of surface water samples and on radiometric data collected with a 256-channel spectroradiometer in the range 400-1100 nm. Empirical relationships between reflectance and TSM concentration are established by linear regression analysis of the data. These relationships are then applied to the image data corrected from atmospheric and surface effects. A good agreement, within a factor of less than two, was found on derived TSM concentration values as...
